If you’re like me, you’ve probably had a complicated relationship with food and your body for a long time.

It’s so hard to know what to eat when there’s a million different experts telling us all conflicting advice.

And when we find we can’t follow through with the guidelines we’ve chosen for ourselves, we feel frustrated, like we have to “start over” because we “failed.”

Plus most of us don’t grow up learning how to handle stress.

Instead we’re taught that food is comfort, so we develop this habit of eating our feelings.

In the most stressful job I ever had, I ate.

I’d eat a giant bag of salt + pepper potato chips for lunch, and then I’d pig out on Little Debbie zebra cakes all weekend. In the moment, the food gave me satisfaction, but when I looked down and found the bag or box empty, I felt the same emptiness in me all over again, plus the guilt for what I’d done.

I was the heaviest I’d ever been. But I was miserable for reasons well beyond weight. I just didn’t know how to handle it. So I kept reaching for the chips and cakes.

More recently I worked at a company that kept their kitchen well stocked with snacks. They had oranges and bananas but I always reached for the pub mix, fig bars, and cookies.

It was the “perfect” quick fix and distraction when I felt bored, tired, or frustrated with my job.

And don’t get me started on bagel and donut Fridays. I couldn’t stand food going to waste so I’d often take home half a dozen donuts on the weekends, on top of what I ate in the office that day. I felt really crappy because, well, I was fueling myself with crap.

Eventually I learned my body is not a garbage disposal.

Since then I’ve developed not only a deep respect for my body, but a desire to FEEL GOOD, even if that means making tough choices. And the better I began to feel, the easier those choices became.

I’ve learned I’m sensitive to sugar and caffeine, so even though I’d LOVE nothing more than to chow down on an espresso fudge ice cream cone on a hot summer day, I have to decline. It’s not worth it. I’d rather feel good.

Even if you give me a giant brownie from my favorite bakery after quarantine on a day when I’m stressed, it will take me 3 days to eat it because I only need a little to be satisfied, and I know sugar will only make the stress worse. In fact, I have much better ways to handle stress now.

BUT I still love to eat! I am part Cookie Monster after all. I enjoy sweets in a way that keeps me on track with my health goals. It’s actually become so easy, and I can’t wait to share everything I’ve learned with you.

Here’s what I’ve learned about how to conquer emotional eating and exactly what I’ll share in Empowered Eater:

  1. We need to learn NEW healthy ways to manage stress and difficult emotions so we don’t have to rely on food anymore.
  2. Food tastes good and eating is a pleasurable experience! We have to also learn how to eat MINDFULLY and listen to our bodies. Then we can enjoy what we want without fear of losing control.

When you combine these 2 approaches, you not only get to the root of emotional eating but also how to have a healthy relationship with food every day.

Empowered Eater is NOT a diet or weight loss program. Rather these lessons will help you get to the root of emotional eating. Every lesson in this course will help you do two things:

1. Manage stress and difficult feelings in a healthy way so you don’t need to rely on food
2. Eat with mindfulness* so you’re honoring your body’s needs

*What is mindful eating? Instead of focusing on WHAT to eat (I can’t tell you that, but YOUR body can) we’ll be focusing on HOW to eat so you can be a better listener to your body. Then knowing WHAT to eat becomes easier, and eating will be a much more pleasurable experience – whether it’s sauteed spinach or cookies!
